Apollo-I Floor-standing Speaker
The Apollo-I sound system is a nearly 6-ft tall, 280 lb large floor-standing speaker system, designed and engineered by Mark & Daniel®. It is a truly exceptional system with stunning output and unparalleled high definition sound reproduction capability. The Apollo-I is designed to appeal to the most discriminating audiophiles, and is suitable for very large listening rooms. It is also excellent for Pro Audio applications such as auditoriums, studios, small cinemas, and so forth.
The Apollo-I is structured as a two-way+ system (plus one additional omni-directional super tweeter), with a low 600Hz crossover and a super low Frequency Modulation Distortion (FMD) index. This large sized floor-standing speaker system employs the latest advanced concepts and state-of-art technology developed by M&D®.
★ System Structure
Each Apollo-I speaker consists of one newly developed M&D® DM-3a AMT Dreams driver, with a huge diaphragm 160 times larger than a conventional 1” dome tweeter! These Dreams drivers are carefully pair-matched for wideband reproduction, from 600Hz up to 20KHz --- over 5 octaves --- which virtually guarantees true high fidelity reproduction, stunning dynamic output, and super low FMD (Frequency Modulation Distortion) pollution, including to the most essential (800-4KHz) Mid Frequency band; the DM-3a Dreams driver enables the Apollo-I speaker system to cover the complete Mid to High Frequency bands with one single driver. This is flawlessly accomplished without acoustics crossovers, without phase variation, without any LC compensation network.
In order to achieve such unparalleled sound quality, two very powerful 10” woofers with stunning output capability, using M&D patented SX (Super Xmax) technology, are employed in the design of the Apollo-I speaker system. These outstanding low distortion drivers accomplish optimized Q-control from 600Hz down to 24 Hz (system F3). This incredible achievement is due to the woofer’s exceptional ± 15mm (1.2”) linear excursion, which allowing the Apollo-I to be operated even under a very high Sound Pressure Levels, for outstanding bass reproduction.
Two 10” SX woofers and one DM-3a Dreams wideband driver are positioned and mounted to produce time coherent output for more precision reproduction, and utilize reversal D’Appollito 3/2 geometry to provide better vertical dispersion pattern for this large Apollo sound system.
These two 10” bass drivers are completely isolated within the enclosure. Each woofer has its own speaker terminal, crossover network with 8 Ohms impedance, yielding a 4 Ohms impedance when the two woofers are in parallel connection. Further, each 10” SX woofer has its own differently structured chamber with two large reflection pipes; these two woofer drivers are tuned to slightly different resonant frequencies to provide superior bass response for the entire sound system.
Each complex speaker enclosure is hand-made and crafted from costly compound marble solid surfacing material (CAM). The cabinet is extremely rigid and heavy (each one weighs 116Kg, or 256 lb) to properly handle the enormous internal pressures developed by these exceptional drivers.
There is one DM-2a Dreams super tweeter installed on the top of each speaker enclosure. The DM-2a super tweeter is wired internally in parallel connection with the DM-3a wideband driver, and both drivers are wired to the MF+HF speaker terminals of the enclosure’s back-side. Featuring high power handling and low FMD reproduction capability, the DM-2a is mounted face upwards to respond only to music’s High Frequency harmonics, from 7KHz up to 35KHz. Thru fine tuning to the (0dB to -6dB) adjustable attenuator to balance, a more vivid and life-like music reproduction image throughout the very high frequency range may be achieved.
Crafted from compound marble, an acoustics diffuser cone is placed on the top of the unit facing downwards to provide a 4π (360 degree) audio radiation pattern into the entire listening room. Listeners will no longer hear HF harmonics only from the speaker’s tweeter, but additionally they will now hear many indirect reflections from the listening room. This creates a more vivid and life-like music reproduction image throughout the very high frequency range.
Because the Apollo-I sound system is large and heavy, a wheeled caster platform is provided which may be placed beneath the speaker enclosure for ease of the speaker movement and placement, in order to provide the best possible adjustment for the sound system. With the caster platform, the complete Apollo-I speaker system weights 127Kg (280 lb). The caster platform is especially useful when the Apollo-I system is used in Pro Audio applications.
